MAKING THE SWITCHBLADE ENGINE COVER – January 25, 2021
Steve Lorentzen and his team are making the engine cover to close out the hole we cut in the rear cabin bulkhead. As you may recall, this was done in order to fit the new 3-cylinder engine. The panels for this engine cover were cut from a large carbon fiber panel made by Composite Approach in Redmond, Oregon. Steve took the cut-out parts and assembled them into this shape, then joined them using carbon fiber strips in the corners.
When done, we will bond this shape to the rear bulkhead to close out the hole and keep fumes and engine noise out of the cabin. We had planned this prototype based on the smaller V4 engine, so now we are having to make changes to accommodate the longer 3-cylinder inline engine.
